Martin Luther - Times

The 'Luther rose' Martin Luther was born into a time of tension and conflict, now recognized as the transitional period between the Middle Ages and the Modern Ages. He helped mould many of the changes which took place during this time. As an Augustinian monk he rebeled against Papal Indulgences and though it was not his intention, his actions started a chain reaction through all of Europe.
Luther's influence went beyond the religious sphere, for example, his translation of the Bible contributed greatly to a uniform written German language.
Although he was very innovative, he sometimes held onto old prejudices, for example against the Jews.
The great reformer was controversial during his time, the centuries thereafter and still today.
The Reformation was unstoppable, and continued even after Luther's death.
